bunny masks

pattern found here - the embellishments were completely azalia's...
and colden's... his current favorite color is black - so he made one for himself and one for his friend. we kind of couldn't resist making more and more, a brown one, a blue one... you know how bunnies can multiply.

to the hex

hex bowl
i cut some of these out for azalia this morning, and then left another sheet for colden while i was occupied with azalia's nap. as you can see above, he designed one that i had cut out into a bowl shape by cutting and folding.
hex truck
then he used his sheet of hexes to design a rainbow truck. he drew the inner-workings on with pencil. i had to print off another sheet so he could tape a light onto it too. coincidentally, one of his own expressions is, 'to the hex!'...i think it means something like, 'to the extreme', 'to the max'... but instead, to the hex!

paper chains

paper chain
we made these little paper chains recently as well. first, i made the bird shape - using a strip of newspaper (i remember seeing the newspaper chain idea from maya long ago). then colden made several bunnies, the owl, and his own paper house chain creations. i love seeing how he takes an idea and runs with it!

water wheel
gorgeous outside today, but i was a little, erm, under the weather, and stayed mostly inside... we made this craft last week, i think. after talking about the condensation on the windows, i printed off this water cycle wheel (yup, pinterest. again.) this is my version, which, ironically, was lost in a water spill. luckily, colden made his own too, and it is still floating about (ha ha ha).

diy illness

ay there's the jello
a touch of the ickies required some extra loving care around here. marc has made juice & gelatin homemade jello with extra vitamin c before...but i followed this recipe (cherry and lemon juices).ay there's the rub and i followed this one for a special healing rub. i have definitely made healing oil blends in the past, but the beeswax makes the texture just right here (it is green-ish because i used grapeseed oil). hope all is well with you and yours! if not, jello shots and rub downs!

with the new little plants going in, we had to seriously trim the chickens' wings. those clever birds had been letting themselves in and out of their chicken "area" by flying over the fence, and then flying back in to their coop at night time. we clipped them a little a few weeks ago, but the chickens were still getting lift and making it over and into the garden, so this time we really went for it. i think the hens miss having full run of the place, but i am happy our baby plants are safe.

little boxes

cardboard house
i finally separated the styrofoam from the dishwasher box and made it livable. first i just cut a door....then a roof was added....then a window, and finally, the flower-box. i taped it on so, naturally, it has since fallen off. but whoa was it cute!

mindful monday

pizza night
linking with stephinie... mindful monday.... so i know this tablecloth was not the best choice for pizza night, but that is what the kids chose. hopefully the stains will only serve to remind me to say yes anyway.

saint patrick's fun

green smoothies
couldn't resist celebrating saint patrick's day with some green foods and crafts. the smoothies are: frozen banana, kale, and coconut water. they were especially appreciated since they were a 'special holiday thing with fancy straws'. marc also made a yummy green-egg casserole (that i did not photograph well). after blending some greens with egg, and not succeeding in getting the desired effect, marc had the clever idea to add a few drops of chlorophyll to the mix. brilliant green!
the kids also enjoyed some gluing with these green hearts - turned clovers. (i made a bunch of paint chip clovers and hung them up too.)
 irish doll
and one more - colden cut out this little paper doll (from this site). and marc had cut one out for azalia to play with too. i think we all had fun celebrating a wee bit.

yarn along - yoke

yarn along yoke
i am yarning along - decreasing and about to begin the neck/hood portion of the sweater! hooray! i only hope there may be one day colden will actually need to wear it yet. maybe when we visit chicago? it is positively springy around here. i ordered the above book in the mail, and it arrived at my house ripped! through the binding and all the way through the first chapters. bleah! i have been avoiding parenting books for awhile, but i have not been avoiding yelling, so i thought i would give it a go... unfortunately, i found myself feeling not-so-peaceful upon receipt of damaged goods. *deep breath* i decided to return it for a shiny new one, but i'm reading it until the new one arrives. i am confident the contents will prove more rewarding than the superficial appearance, right?

felted foxes

felted fox
i wanted to share this gorgeous felted fox that azalia received from our dear friend for her birthday. colden also received one for his birthday, but it must be hiding in its fox den somewhere! felting is not my forte, so i am even more impressed with these lovely creations. they feel so nice to hold and they stand so well on their own. isn't it just darling?

calming calming glitter

i have been trying to take "positive timeouts" (for myself - the concept comes from positive discipline). this "calm jar" concept comes from pinterest (yet again), and when i first saw it i thought it looked cool, but... well. actually, it must have imprinted upon me more than i realized, because then i decided that i was the one who needed it. you can use it to re-center yourself when you are in a difficult emotional spot. shake, shake, shake the jar, then watch the glitter sink. as it floats down, you breathe deeply and calm yourself as well. cool, right? it is actually even prettier than these photos.
glitter glue
more glitter
after searching through various techniques, i learned that you must use glitter glue (and not just glitter) to get the full effect. boil your water, then whisk in the glitter glue to dissolve it. i used both bottles of glue above, and just a small amount of the full-on glitter in each of my two jars. i also tried to scrape off the extra bubblies from the top of the pot when whisking. as you can see, it still is pretty bubbly.
at rest
here it is "at rest". i think next time i will try it with less glitter glue. i have not yet super-glued the lid on as recommended. also, i maybe be buying the plastic jars of peanut butter for the next few go arounds, because i don't really think all that glitter on the floor would be so very pretty...or calming.

having a working printer has been a game-changer too. not on par with the dishwasher, but loads of fun nonetheless. (ha!) we lost our paper scrap bookmark, so i printed these off and left them for colden to cut out. perfect.

still going
so this is a terrible picture i took last week. still. i am still at it! knitting and reading.

scented glitter dough

orange scented glitter dough

we were inspired by a friend who recently made green, mint-scented play dough with gold glitter in honor of st. patrick's day. ours, however, was colored yellow and scented with wild orange and other various citrus essential oils. and the glitter. of course, the glitter.

Monday, March 4, 2013

you may have already seen this project float across your pinterest feed. i printed it out last week, and in a 'what to do' moment constructed it with colden. we are shockingly short of hot glue, so we used tape. and i co-opted a knitting needle for the mast. usually i am pretty anti-using-knitting-needles-for-anything-other-than-knitting (to set a good example and all), but i never use the metal ones. and it just seemed so right. colden designed the anchor, and added seats, but i think he had more fun constructing a 'stage' from the remains of the box.

by dishwasher at home

i have really been struggling with the dishes for... oh, the past five years or so. finally, this week, i tracked down and purchased a portable dishwasher. it is revolutionary. the kids even help load it, and the dishes are out of sight even when they are not clean. i don't know that it is the key to life itself, but it is a real boon around here. while i appreciate the beauty of hand-washing, i appreciated the little hike we were able to take while the dishes washed themselves even more so.
