yarn along - pocket

yarn along pocket
yarning along again... i have gotten to the part where i add the pocket to the sweater, so that is encouraging! we finished pippi, although i skipped over the last part where they find guns in the attic and pippi shoots two holes in the roof. (?!?!) i was also a bit worried colden would be distraught by the 4 year-old and 5 year-old that pippi saves from a burning house (their mother left them home alone while she ran an errand). we checked this book out from the library and it is a fun exploration of feelings. i couldn't resist adding our heart guy to the picture.

here are a couple book lists i've come across this week that look awesome.

67 books every geek should read to their kids before age 10
top read aloud books starring mighty girls
self-esteem books for children

i have read plenty of the first and second lists (or had them read to me as a child - thanks mom!), but none of the third. i am excited to read lots of these.

little mitts

kids mitts
these were really simple and quick to make. now i am envisioning a bundle of them with maybe a slightly smaller stitch and a rainbow-patterned yarn...wouldn't that be sweet?

little hands

i have been making an effort to include fewer pictures of my children (though they are so adorable), and instead include their little hands at work. i want to respect their privacy, now and in the future, so it seemed like a good solution. when we were working on a project, i asked colden if he would place his hand in one of my photos. later i was working independently and began taking, he graciously laid his hand in front of the lens. i was very touched, and then self-conscious again about this medium and its effects on my family. later, colden declined to have a photo taken in the new mitts i made for him, but azalia was happy for a chance wear them. so it goes...

homemade deodorant

here is our homemade deodorant. we basically use amy karol's version, and add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 15 drops grapefruit seed extract. i like to use elemi and red thyme essential oils. we've been using this deodorant for over a year (maybe more), and love it.

yarn along - barely

yarn along barely
in starting blogging again, i hoped for a bit of impetus to resume my knitting. it can't be too much to photograph a ball of yarn and a book, right? well, apparently yes. i was ill yesterday, and too busy today catching up, and only now, well - here it is. (and i did get in a few rounds resting in bed with the kids even.) thanks to marc for helping me figure it out! i've been reading pippi to colden. he naturally wanted to sleep like she does with his toes on his pillow.

heart garland

cutting hearts i splurged on a new toy. there is a sweet scrapbooking store nearby, where i got this fiskars heart cutter (er, squeeze punch). colden can even use it by himself. yet again inspired by pinterest, i set out to make this paint chip heart garland (here is the punch they used.)heart garland i love how it turned out. this one i made with sewing thread, but then i made another with twine (was a bit too thick). i think a string that is sturdier than thread, but not so hefty as twine would be nice. i also made a little one with construction paper hearts, again with thread, and they suited each other well. i was thinking i ought to pass this tool around a bit since it was kind of an investment, however, we are still thoroughly enjoying it! (plus - another fun heart garland to make...)

yarn along - slump

i haven't knitted in a long, long time. i first got stuck on this pattern when a ball of yarn went missing, then i couldn't find the needles, and at last when i finally had it going - i came to a bit of math...... i always ask my husband to figure out the math to my knitting patterns. i know i should just do it, but there it is.

then the pattern went missing (for months), and i lost a ball of yarn again (so i didn't even entertain the thought of buying another pattern). now, they have finally both turned up (yarn and pattern). there is just the matter of two holes to mend (which seems really wrong before it is even knitted), and that math. so, i don't think it will end up fitting colden as intended, but it could fit azalia, and maybe get me knitting again?

joining the yarn along today (and added the button to my sidebar)!

winter mantle

paper house
pinterest again. the artist who made this little house offers it here on her blog, along with a blank copy for you to design your own little house. i've printed off five in anticipation.

 winter mantle
using salt in vases for a wintery display was another pinterest idea. our mantle often collects mail and becomes a depository for random stuff. so, i have been searching for simple seasonal ideas to decorate instead. i used bath salt and rosemary branches from the front yard. now our house smells like rosemary too!

i finally jumped on the bandwagon and joined pinterest. it is so much fun! we have made these cute little heart-shaped carrots, as well as this toilet-paper-tube-turned-heart-stamp, and a fun paper model of the eiffel tower. i put a link to follow me on pinterest right over there on the sidebar, if you care to join me. let me know if you are there already; i'd love to follow you too!

happy 2013

here's hoping that you and yours enjoyed a magical holiday season and a bright new year! i hope to both be back here more frequently and off the computer more frequently too. we'll see how that works out.
